“Community Participatory Legal Aid Initiative Project”

            With the aid of USAID/PRLP program, Phoenix Association carried out the “Community Participatory Legal Aid Initiative Project” in Hlaing Tharyar township of Yangon Region as well as in Mahar Aung Myay and Pyigyitakhun townships of Mandalay Region from May’ 2017 till May’ 2018. Especially aids were provided for discriminated groups. The aim of the project is to provided more legal aids for victims or people that have escaped from danger, and to bring about the prevalence of justice all over the country. Legal aids are court representation cases, legal counseling, preparation for court process, free of charge meditation, and legal representation. Under this project Phoenix Association has provided legal aids free of charge for victims of gender base violence, domestic violence, sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Phoenix Association has provided the following services for people who have been really (actually) affected during the period of one year under the project.

  • (8) free of charge court representation cases. They are as follow:
  • Cheating by Sexual Abuse ( 2 cases)
  • Gender Base Violence (2 cases)
  • Prostitution Act (2 cases)
  • Yangon Police Act (1 cases)
  • Kidnapping  (1 case)

 

  • The following legal advice and other services are provided for people affected by gender base violence, domestic violence and human trafficking.
  • Legal advice
  • Counselling
  • Mediation
  • Preparation for case process
  • Referral system
  • Safe House

These legal advice and other services are provided for 200 cases in Yangon project area and 300 cases in Mandalay project area.

  • Services were provided for women and children in Hlaing Tharyar and Mandalay in12 cases of pretrial legal process. 6 cases in Yangon and 6 cases in Mandalay project area.

The 12 pretrial legal cases are as follow:

  • Child Abuse (5 cases)
  • Gender Base Violence (2 cases)
  • Rape (1 case)
  • Cheating By Sexual Abuse (2 cases)
  • Rape (1 case)
  • Assault (1 case)

 

  • By giving 5 day training course on sharing awareness in rule of law affairs to 30 activists each from Hlaing Tharyar township and Mahar Aung Myay township, Phoenix Association produced community Mobilizers who would actively take part in rule of law activities in their respective wards and villagers.
  • Meeting were held three times to coordinate government departments and civil society organizations that are carrying out rule of law activities within the township.
  • 1000 copies of Legal Service Booklets were distributed.
