Activities on promoting the rule of law

Phoenix implemented the basic legal knowledge training and legal support to the public from 2014 to 2017 was supported by USAID / PRLP, and have also been working on the PLHIV Bill of Rights and recently revised prostitution law with partner social networks, and we are in the process of awareness and advocacy to Drug policy and law.

Legal awareness and free legal aid service to support Legal Aid Law (2016) project is support by USAID and will be implemented from February’2020 to February’2022 coordinate with Chemonics International.

This project will provide a good support for an update and reform process of the judiciary in Myanmar and the suspects will also enjoy equal rights before the law.

Project Activities

-           Awareness

Provide awareness raising to target groups and disseminate knowledge of legal aid to community

-           Legal Aid Service

Legal defendants will be provided free legal advice to 80 cases that meet the legal aid criteria established by the Phoenix in the respective courts in the four districts (east, south, north, west) in Yangon region were identified as criminal suspects and were accused.

Requirements for access to Phoenix legal aid
1. Must be a criminal defendant in the relevant court in Yangon Region.
2. Accused of any crime; Maintenance; Arrest; Prosecution and sentencing; The imprisoned poor; children, women, the elderly, the disabled, people living with HIV (MSM, LGBT, Sex worker, Drug User), people with other infectious diseases; Priority will be given to migrants and migrant workers.
3. Legal aid will be provided to defendants (related with Race, Religion, Skin color, Gender) who have been charged with a criminal offense without discrimination on the   basis of sexual orientation.
4. Phoenix officials will provide legal assistance to the accused as required.
